Theory of Semotics

Semiotics Terms = The definition Signifier= the thing that makes you think (a sign) Signified=the thing you think. (a meaning) Denotation=All signs are said to have a single basic or literal meaning which is called its denotation it is what the sign denotes. (say what you see) connotation=Develop when signs and codes are placed within a particular context, one brings to mind an associated and existing memory or idea. (meaning you create) symbolic signs=Has no resemblance to the signifier and signified. connection must culturally learned. Iconic signs=has a physical resemblance to the signified, the thing being represented. indexical signs=shows evidence of whats being represented.

Graphics

Graphics day 1 Materials paper indesign illustrator photoshop Process On the first day of graphics we learnt about typography. In typography we used different lines such as the ascender line, baseline and the descender line. These lines help make your letters. We then tried to create our own font incorporating the lines. After that we took out some cameras and tried to find objects around the college that look like letters of the alphabet. We had to try and find as many as we can.  In the afternoon we took one of our photos and then put into indesign and illustrator to turn it into a magazine cover. We also looked at the different ratios a photo can be split into. The different ratios are the rule of thirds, the golden ratio, the diagonal ratio and the spiral ratio. We changed the brightness and contrast by using the curve bar. a And then added text to the photo so that the cover had a title. Technical skills The skills that we learnt from g

Media

Media Jobs Director Floor manager Sound Camera Actors Lighting Camera change Autocue Process The aim of the lesson was to create an advert for a pen company called Bic. We then got split up into groups to brainstorm ideas for the advert. After all four groups came up with their plan we pitched it to the teacher who then decided who's idea was best. Then the teacher picked the best one and we started to develop the idea and start to produce the advert. We were all  given  different jobs so that we could successfully make the advert. The rolls were the actors, director, floor manager, camera, lighting, camera change and  auto cue. My job was to operate one of the 4 cameras.I was positioned diagonally so that I could get side views of the actors. The whole advert lasted 30 seconds. And it took 5-6 times to complete it as it was a live recording so their was no room for mistakes. Technical Skills The technical skills we learnt from media is how to use the

Art & Design

Art & Design day 1 Materials Pencils Paper Graphite Acrylic paint Ink Acetate Cartridge paper Process The first thing we done for the art carousel was mark making. We had a dozen pieces of paper and each time the teacher would give us a feeling to draw for example we had to draw anger. She then played music and told us to draw the music which was the most difficult part. The types of music that was played were rock and classical. After that we put some of our best drawings onto an A2 piece of paper and made a collage Experimenting with acrylic paint, Charcoal and graphite. In the Afternoon we done some mono printing using different paper based materials that had indents in them which meant that we could create some cool effects.  After preparing the materials that we needed, We used a roller to cover the material in ink. Once that was done we put the materials through a press on top of some cartridge paper. The result showed the inked pattern on the paper.

Frank Machalowski | Chaos

Frank Michalowski Frank Machalowski is a German freelance photographer who I came across whilst searching for photos that show chaos. After further research i came across a series of photos called "monster".  The photos look really moody to me as they are black and white and have high contrast. The photos include the rush of people. which creates a blur. The way he creates these photos is by using a slow shutter speed of 5 seconds to get the blur. To recreate these photos I am going to go to London and shoot long exposures of people walking past. The equipment I will use will be my camera a tripod a shutter release and a ND filter. The photograph on the left is interesting as it is symmetrical and also has leading lines that draw your eyes to the top third of the picture. I like the different shades of black and grey that the rush of people create. This reminds me of a pencil smudge. This is a photo I took in the style of frank Machalowski. The locati

Aperture | Depth Of Field

Depth of Field Depth of field is how much of the photo is in focus. the way we do this is by using a wide aperture. what is aperture? Aperture, is a ring in the lens that you can alter depending on how much light you want in the lens. F1.8 is a wide aperture and can create blurry backgrounds. F9-F11 is where you can get everything in focus. The negative side to this is that it doesn't let in as much light . Bokeh is when there is light in the background of a wide aperture photo and the blurred light turns into circles. the more aperture blades the lens has the more circular the bokeh is. Next i am going to put what ive learnt into practice by taking photos using small and wide apertures on my 50mm F1.8. This is a photo taken at F9 this is a fairly small aperture because everything in the picture is focused. T o counter balance the small aperture I needed to have a slower shutter speed because i needed more light to create the image.
