Photograms

Today we went into the darkroom to create some photograms using objects that we brought from home.

Photographic paper

Developer chemical
Stop chemical
Fix chemical

Processes

To create the photogram we needed some photographic paper. Photographic paper is different to regular paper because it is light sensitive.  We then placed our photographic paper under the enlarger
(which is a huge light that exposes certain  parts of the paper for a short amount of time)
After that we placed our objects onto the paper and used the enlarger for 6 seconds.  The object I used was my earphones.

After the 6 seconds, we started to make the image appear using different chemicals, the paper was placed in 3 different trays.

The first chemical that the paper goes into is called the developer. The developer makes the image visible and should be used for 2 minutes.

The second chemical is called the stopper chemical which prevents the image from developing further and also means that when you take the photogram outside it doesn't get affected by the light. This chemical should be used for 10 seconds.

The last chemical is called the fixer which does a similar job to the stopper as it prevents any further development. This should be used for 1 minute

To finish off we place the photogram in water to rinse off any chemicals for 5 minutes and then run it through a dryer so that it isn't wet.

Technical skills

The technical skills you have to know is that it is very important to keep the paper in the chemicals for the right amount of time, the whole process is very time specific.
If you take the photogram out of the developer to quickly it can come out grey or yellow, instead of white. Another skill is to know how long you should expose the paper for using the enlarger.

Here are some photos i have created in the darkroom using different techniques.
this was the first photogram I done. To create this photo I used my earphones. I exposed the paper for 6 seconds and this was the result. there is a smudge which i think came from the tongs.
With this photogram I used a brush to cover the page in developer. This gives a cool effect to the photogram.
this is a double exposure of my hand and also some feathers. You create this image by doing a 3 second exposure of one object. Followed by another 3 second exposure.

Anaglyphic effect in photoshop

After thinking about my options i came to the conclusion that i wanted to create an image with a 3D effect for my final piece.  Creating an anaglyphic photo is actually very simple, it only consists of 3 steps. Step 1)  The first step is to take the image you want to develop and drag it down to the tab which looks like a post it note. this will duplicate the layer so that you have a foreground and a background layer.  Step 2) Once you have your two layers you want to double click on the layer that is at the top. the photo on the left shows what it looks like. what you want to do is look for the three ticked boxes labelled "R" "G" and "B". you want to untick the "R" box. then press ok and you will return back to your photo ready for the final step. Step 3) before we do the final step you must make sure that you have clicked on the top layer before you adjust the layers as if the bottom later is selected you wont be...

Frank Machalowski | Chaos

Frank Michalowski Frank Machalowski is a German freelance photographer who I came across whilst searching for photos that show chaos. After further research i came across a series of photos called "monster".  The photos look really moody to me as they are black and white and have high contrast. The photos include the rush of people. which creates a blur. The way he creates these photos is by using a slow shutter speed of 5 seconds to get the blur. To recreate these photos I am going to go to London and shoot long exposures of people walking past. The equipment I will use will be my camera a tripod a shutter release and a ND filter. The photograph on the left is interesting as it is symmetrical and also has leading lines that draw your eyes to the top third of the picture. I like the different shades of black and grey that the rush of people create. This reminds me of a pencil smudge. This is a photo I took in the style of frank Machalowski. The locati...

Strawberry Decay Gif

This is my Gif that shows an example of decay, which I created using a strawberry. For six days I captured a photo once in the morning and once in the evening, from the exact same position, so there wasn't a noticeable frame difference.  There are 12 photos in total. The reason why I chose a strawberry is because they are very quick to decay and therefore would be a good subject to capture for this experiment.  The frame speed is set to 0.05 which is standard for a Gif video. To experiment further I reversed all the frames so that the length of the Gif was extended and would show more colour differentiation between ripe and rotten.
